Introduction to Galaxy On Glass

“What could be more beautiful than the heavens, which contain all beautiful things?”

Nicolaus Copernicus

You are in the Australia and New Zealand web site

After many years photographing some of the remarkable beauty of deep space, I wanted to share this as an art form, using the images to create unique art pieces for others to enjoy.
All the art is created from photographs taken and processed by me personally, using my equipment at an observatory high in the  Mountains of Spain. As I capture my images, some of which are millions of light years away, I select those best suited for my art and process them to maximise the ‘wow factor’, creating stunning and unique art for my customers.
I encourage you to take a look at these limited edition collections and do contact me if you would like to discuss more about the art, the photography or you would like to own a piece from ‘The Galaxy On Glass’.
My Fine Art printer ships worldwide and I have already started shipping to Australia and New Zealand and have customers here. I also have many customers in the UK, USA, Israel, Belgium and Germany.

A beautiful sight this star forming region is 6000 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus The Swan. It is actually often known as the Tulip Nebula hence my name for it! This image is made up of over 30 hours of imaging from my observatory atop a mountain in Spain. It truly does look dramatic as wall art.

AN ISLAND IN SPACE

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit.
This is a beautiful spiral galaxy known as The Triangulum Galaxy and contains 40 billion suns at a distance of 3 million light years. This means the light took 3 million years to travel through the universe to my camera to create this picture. With its billions of suns and spiral arms it makes for a stunning image on frameless acrylic or backlit. This image was originally printed in UK publication Astronomy Now magazine and has been the most regularly ordered by my customers.

STAR BIRTH ONE

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

This image won a prize in The Sky at Night Magazine. It is of a star forming region in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan. Riding high in the sky on summer nights, this was photographed using special filters over many nights in July 2014. These filters enabled the capture of fine detail in beautiful colours, making for a spectacular piece of art.

THE PACMAN

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

Named because of its likeness the munching beasts from the old computer game this is the Pacman Nebula. Captured here using narrowband filters to accentuate the stunning detail, with the central blues being ionized Oxygen. With the contrasting black sky around this is dramatic in frameless or backlit.

THE WIZARD

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

This quite remarkable star cluster and nebula is located in the constellation of Cephus and is about 7500 light years away. This image took over 20 hours of data with special filters and is processed using the same techniques as those used for the Hubble space telescope images. The result is an image of rich colours and fine detail, ideal for producing on acrylic and giving a unique piece of art.

ANDROMEDA AND FRIENDS

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

A mighty galaxy weighing in with a mind boggling trillion stars. This is the nearest elliptical galaxy to our own Milky Way at about 2.5 million light years distance. Andromeda is the largest in the group of about 44 galaxies. Captured in this image are two ‘friends’ of Andromdea, satellite galaxies on course for collision. In fact we are also due to collide with Andromeda, but no time soon. Worth having on your wall as a reminder of what is to come.

THE PELICAN

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

An award winning image currently on display at the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London. At 1,800 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus the Swan, this huge mass of ionised gas and dust is a highly active star forming region. Imaged over many nights in the summer of 2014 with a range of filters to show the beautiful detail this objects holds. This looks almost abstract art and has what looks like brush strokes but are in fact violent stellar winds from baby stars. As a piece of art this is truly striking.

A GLIMPSE OF THE SOUL

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

Stars are forming in the Soul of the Queen of Aethopia the wife of a King ruling in the upper Nile in Greek Mythology. This large star forming region is the Soul Nebula in the constellation of Cassiopeia. This is 7,500 light years away and a massive 100 light years across and using special filters I have captured the intense beauty and intense colours which look immense on acrylic or backlit.

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

Approximately 8000 years ago a massive star exploded as a ‘supernova’. Here you see a section of the remains of this cataclysmic event as dust, gas and plasma flying through space. Although this is the end of a star it also represents a beginning as supernovae make up part of all you see, stars, planets, you and me! (Please note this piece is slightly wider than the other images).

SUPERNOVA-THE VEIL

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

Approximately 8000 years ago a massive star exploded as a ‘supernova’. Here you see another section of the remains of this cataclysmic event as dust, gas and plasma flying through space. THE BUBBLE

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

A giant hot star is over 7000 light years away and is creating massive stellar winds which are interacting with the surrounding dust to create this amazing looking object. Here I’ve tried to create a mood look, almost like the moon peeping through the clouds. Looks beautiful on the wall.

THE ELEPHANT’S TRUNK

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

Here we have a massive column of dust and ionized gas reaching across space and contained within a wide star forming region within the constellation of Cepheus. This is the same object as ‘Star Birth Two’, just photographed in a completely different way to capture different wavelengths. Very dramatic.

MIDDLE AGED AND HOT

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

This cluster of stars, born together and now middle aged, remain hot! They form quite a stunning site as they pass through the interstellar medium, heating it up and causing it to glow. What else is there to say!?

ORION NEBULA

Limited Edition Frameless or Backlit

The stunning and iconic Orion Nebula, this can be seen with the naked eye, but not quite like this! Makes for a super image in the collection.

FAQ

Yes exclusively my own so you are acquiring an art piece from me, the photographer, not a ‘stock shot’ from some library. Plus my images will not be printed on media other than The Galaxy On Glass Collections.

Knowing about these wondrous objects enriches the art. Perhaps it is a galaxy with a trillion suns with the light having taken millions of years to reach earth. Or maybe it is a gigantic colourful cloud stretching hundreds of millions of miles where suns are being born?

Each art piece comes with information on the object and how it was photographed.

All the prices for the standard sizes are on the page above. If you would like a special size then just contact me to discuss. Click here to contact me directly.

Each art piece comes with the chord and plug ready to install, simply plug in. (It’s just like a power chord of a laptop). Most people simply enclose the wire in a plastic cover on the wall and paint this the same as the wall. Others have had a plug socket installed behind the picture or have it wired-in professionally.

These Backlit frames use the latest technology and feature a design to give even illumination across the whole picture. They use LED lights which are very low power, do not fail and give out almost no heat. In addition, the high quality wooded frame around the side is built in one piece so there can never be light escaping through a joint. Expect your art to outlast you.

The Frameless collection are relatively light in all sizes. They simply have one or two brackets which simply attach to the screws you place in the place. The Backlit 80cm is also easy to hang as it has a string. The 1.2M has one lug in each corner, simple, but is quite heavy so needs two people to lift into place. But apart from that it is all quite straightforward. There is no need for Uncle Podger to help:

“…Then we had to find the rule and the string again, and a new hole was made; and, about midnight, the picture would be up — very crooked and insecure, the wall for yards round looking as if it had been smoothed down with a rake, and everybody dead beat and wretched — except Uncle Podger. “There you are,” he would say, stepping heavily off the chair on to the charwoman’s corns, and surveying the mess he had made with evident pride. “Why, some people would have had a man in to do a little thing like that!”(Extract from ‘Three Men in a Boat’ by Jerome K Jerome).

We deliver worldwide. The professional Fine Art printing companies I work with are highly experienced in shipping art globally. For very large pieces a frame is built to house the art during transit. It will arrive perfect. The shipping cost is quoted separately and includes the necessary insurance.
Once you have chosen your image, the type and the size, just drop me an email and we can take it from there. I then send you a confirmation. Then payment is made  usually via bank transfer. It takes three to four weeks before it is ready for shipment and I keep you updated as we go and agree a convenient delivery day.
Yes I do commissions. I can give you guidance and a choice of images that would work. Or you may already know the one you want!

Not all deep space objects lend themselves to being printed on acrylic. Also the object must be available for imaging from my site in Spain and be available for me to capture many hours of data over perhaps weeks. Also note, not all objects are available all year round so you may have to wait! But I will guide you.

I can also produce one-off variations of the current Collections. This may be a unique Triptych for example.

The commissioned art comes with a certificate of authenticity; confirmation of it being a one-off.

Yes both ranges are expanding. It takes time to capture these objects and even longer to process them. I then work with the Fine Art printer, testing with proofs  until the image processing is optimised and we have something that we think looks great and worthy of being on your wall. I expect to add a number new pieces per year. Note that all pieces are limited edition. Please contact me for more information.
The Limited Edition Framed Backlit come in two sizes: 80cm and 1.2M widths. The Frameless come in three sizes, 40cm, 80cm and 1.2M widths. The depths are about 70% of the widths but it does vary depending upon the precise crop. Having said this, do contact me if you would prefer a custom size as I would be delighted to adapt to what you require.
